Matthew appears regularly as lead counsel in the High Court and Court of Appeal.  He provides advice and advocacy in most areas of commercial law, including company and securities, contract, insolvency, insurance, professional liability, and property.

Before joining Gilbert/Walker, Matthew was a senior litigation associate at Clifford Chance LLP in London.  He practised US law at Covington & Burling in Washington, DC (1999-2000) and at Davis Polk in London (2000-2003).

Matthew is a member of the NZLS Litigation Skills Faculty and the NZLS Law Reform Committee.

Matthew started his career as a Judges’ Clerk at the High Court.  He received a number of academic awards at Auckland Law School, including a Senior Prize in Law, and won the Stout Shield advocacy competition.  He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and Hauser Global Scholarship in 1998 to take his LLM at New York University.
