Our Legal Internship

Our Legal Internship

We offer two part-time internship opportunities throughout the year – one which takes place over the summer break, and the second during semesters 1 and 2 of the university year.

The Internship is designed to provide a unique opportunity for you to get hands-on commercial litigation experience in a specialist litigation firm.

You will collaborate on challenging and diverse problems and gain a working understanding of how commercial litigation works.

The role will involve a combination of working on your own and working with our Partners, Associates and support staff.

We will consider penultimate year students depending on their study commitments and timetables. Candidates should have an outstanding academic record, excellent research and writing skills, and a willingness to assist with other client and professional development work.

You will need to be self-motivated, keen to learn and help, and to bring the highest standards of excellence to your work.

What will a Legal Internship at Gilbert Walker be like?

The internship will begin with an induction to assist you in learning how the office operates, the values and culture of Gilbert Walker, and you’ll meet the whole team.

Our point of difference is that we operate a model of small, closely engaged teams. Our lawyers are involved in all aspects of their files and work closely together. You will have opportunities to work directly with both Associates and Partners. You’ll be actively involved in reviewing documents, researching legal issues, preparing opinions, drafting documents, and observing mediation or court hearings if they are scheduled.

You will get a good understanding of dispute resolution processes. Our clients include major corporates, financial institutions, insurers and professional firms. This means you can expect exposure to a wide range of corporate and commercial issues, such as class actions, regulatory investigations, construction disputes, insurance matters and judicial reviews.  You will experience working on a range of disputes from the day-to day through to high-profile and strategically significant cases.

Get to know us, understand how we work, and whether commercial and corporate litigation is the career for you.

Applications

Applications will open in October/November each year for the summer internship, and prior to semester 1 and 2 for the part-time internships during the academic year.

If you are a final year law student or recent graduate, and if you are looking to gain experience in a specialist litigation firm, we would love to hear from you.

You will need to commit to work three full-time consecutive days each week.

If this appeals to you, please send your resume and transcript with a brief cover letter to applications@gilbertwalker.com

The application process

We will acknowledge your application and let you know if you have been shortlisted for the initial interview, when we will be hoping to learn more about you, why you are interested in litigation, and why you want to an internship at Gilbert Walker. We’ll tell you a bit about us and what it is like to work at the firm.

After the initial interview, we will select candidates for the second face-to-face interview process where you will meet with partners from the firm.
